I am a non-EU citizen out of town student, I wanted to know how health care works in Italy and what to do to be able to use it

The healthcare provided by the Italian National Health Service provides two levels of assistance:
1. generic, provided by the general practitioner and free
2. specialist, prescribed by the general practitioner and then to be booked at the competent local ASL. It is subject to payment of the service fee.
Foreign students from outside the EU to benefit from the services of the Italian National Health Service must first register with the Service, paying the sum of EUROS 149.77 per calendar year (from 1 January to 31 December).
To register, you must go to the competent local ASL.

Need to find out which is your competent ASL for the area?
Write to
info.healthcare@edisu-piemonte.it indicating your address in the city where you are studying.

Once registered with the National Health Service, always at the ASL you can choose your primary care physician, to whom you can go for general visits, which you will receive for free.

I am a non-EU citizen outside the city, I need a general medical examination: what should I do?

You must contact your primary care physician, who you have chosen from the ASL.

I am a non-EU citizen outside the city, I need a specialist medical examination of a diagnostic exam or other specialist health service: what should I do?

You must first contact your primary care physician who has an agreement with the National Health Service, who will prescribe any specialist health services (specialist visits, diagnostic exams, etc.), which you will have to book with the local ASL paying the relative fee.

I am an out-of-home EU student, I urgently need a general medical examination and I do not have a GP in the city where I am studying: what should I do?

Ask a general practitioner agreement with the National Health Service, equipped with a European Health Card (TEAM) and identity document, as well as a legible photocopy of the TEAM.

The general practitioner will provide general health services and will prescribe any specialized health services (specialist visits, diagnostic tests, etc.), also requesting reimbursement from the competent foreign institution through the ASL.
